PB101 (Era 4): S1:02 – Seeing in Boxes (Visualizing Structure)

Being able to look at a design or an existing website and visualize the boxes that are going to be necessary to construct it is an important skill to learn. And yes, it requires practice. But this one skill is the backbone of everything you'll be doing in web development.

If you can't visualize structure by "seeing in boxes," you're never going to be able to build from scratch.

In this lesson I'll show you how to visualize in boxes, and I'll communicate critical principles such as "group associated content" and "use the minimum number of boxes required to get the job done."

In fact, there's a good Mark Twain quote you should use to guide you in your development practices: "A successful book is not made of what is in it, but what is left out of it."

"Good code" is concise code. We need to avoid extra stuff that doesn't accomplish the job and we certainly need to avoid creating (or using tools that create) … absolute slop.
